President Donald Trump unloaded on Sen. Thom Tillis on Friday after the North Carolina Republican declared he would block Todd Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general unless Blanche publicly condemns the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol, a demand Trump dismissed as the posturing of a lame-duck senator with a grudge.
The confrontation marks the latest clash between the White House and a departing GOP senator willing to leverage a narrow majority. Tillis, who announced earlier this year that he will not seek reelection in 2026, has positioned himself as a gatekeeper on Trump’s cabinet picks before, most notably during the confirmation fight over Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
