President Donald Trump on Friday celebrated the decision of the Virginia Supreme Court to strike down a redistricting referendum that would have seen the state redraw its maps to heavily skew toward the Democrats. The state Supreme Court found that the amendment process violated the state constitution and was thereby void.
“Huge win for the Republican Party, and America, in Virginia. The Virginia Supreme Court has just struck down the Democrats’ horrible gerrymander,” he posted on Truth Social.
The ruling is a win for Republicans, who likely maintain most of their five seats in the state. The redraw would have seen the maps adjusted to include only one Republican-leaning district.
As more and more states across the South redraw their maps in response to the Supreme Court ruling on the Voting Rights Act, moreover, the GOP is expected to net roughly a dozen seats for the 2026 cycle.
