President Donald Trump on Friday brushed off Canada’s decision to disinvite Americans for the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, saying he was satisfied with the profit-sharing agreement and Canada’s continued paying of tariffs. The bridge links Ontario and Michigan. The Canadian infrastructure minister’s office, however, declared it would be inappropriate for the U.S. to celebrate with the Canadians, “[i]n light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week,” according to the New York Times.
Trump, for his part, brushed off the snub and reminded Canada that it had agreed to share the toll revenue from the bridge.
“Canada disinvited the United States of America to the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is fine, considering they are paying substantial TARIFFS to the United States, but the original Deal on the Bridge, which was terribly negotiated by a previous Administration, no longer stands,” he posted on Truth Social. “We changed the terms of the Deal so that the United States of America now gets 50% of the Profit.”
The bridge opening comes amid a longstanding trade row between Washington and Ottawa.
