President Donald Trump on Wednesday criticized the Virginia redistricting referendum as a “rigged election” after the result saw Virginia voters narrowly back a redistricting plan expected to favor Democrats. The referendum saw voters pass a constitutional amendment to permit mid-decade redistricting in a roughly 51% to 49% vote.
“A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT IN THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA!” Trump posted on Truth Social. “All day long Republicans were winning, the Spirit was unbelievable, until the very end when, of course, there was a massive ‘Mail In Ballot Drop!’ Where have I heard that before — And the Democrats eked out another Crooked Victory!”
Trump has long criticized mail-in ballots, pointing to the uptick in the practice due to COVID-19 as driving his 2020 election loss. Republicans have since moved to restrict mail-in voting across myriad states.
“Six to five goes to ten to one, and yet the Presidential Election in November was very close to a 50-50 split,” he said, referencing the likely change in the state’s congressional delegation. “In addition to everything else, the language on the Referendum was purposefully unintelligible and deceptive. As everyone knows, I am an extraordinarily brilliant person, and even I had no idea what the hell they were talking about in the Referendum, and neither do they! Let’s see if the Courts will fix this travesty of ‘Justice.'”
The Virginia Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments on the referendum and former state Attorney General Jason Miyares has vowed to proceed with a legal challenge.
