Trump asks Supreme Court to reinstate citizenship records system used to remove non-citizen voters

President Donald Trump on Monday asked the Supreme Court to reinstate a citizenship records system his administration used to remove noncitizen voters from the rolls. The Department of Homeland Security used the data program, known as Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE), to conduct voter roll audits, CNN reported.
The system has been on hold in most of the country since a lower court ruled that the Trump administration violated privacy laws in how it expanded the program for removal of noncitizen voters.
US Solicitor General John Sauer argued in the new filing that the “indefensible” ruling by the lower court “threatens the integrity of upcoming elections.”
Critics of the program argue it produces inaccurate results, resulting in citizens being denied their right to vote. Trump has made the program a key tool in his government-wide effort to improve election security and prevent noncitizens from voting.
Many Republican-led states have wanted to use SAVE to audit their voter rolls for potential noncitizens, while acknowledging that the results need to be verified before voters are removed from the rolls.
Voter advocacy groups filed a lawsuit after the Trump administration expanded the program to make it easier for states to use it for voter roll audits. DHS improved the program to add sets of data, such as Social Security records, and allowed states to upload their voter lists in bulk. Before the changes, states could only use the data program for individualized checks of a voter’s citizenship status.
