President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the arrival of the first 1 million barrels of Venezuelan oil that he secured in a deal with Caracas after the ouster of President Nicolás Maduro.Special forces extracted Maduro from Venezuela to face charges in the U.S. earlier this year. Trump subsequently negotiated a deal with acting President Delcy Rodriguez to revitalize the country’s failing oil industry.
Speaking at a rally in Texas, Trump pointed to a ship outside the venue, saying it had 1 million barrels of oil aboard from Venezuela.
“This historic win gives us control over a massive part of the world’s oil supply,” he said of the deal. “It will be refined here in TEXAS—including right here in Corpus Christi.”
Energy prices have been a sore spot for Republicans since Trump launched the Iran war in late February, which sent global supply into chaos. He has subsequently worked to stabilize prices through an agreement with Russia to inject diesel into the global supply and with Venezuela to ramp up its own production.
But both deals have come with scrutiny, especially the pact with Moscow, which has led to diplomatic tensions with Ukraine.
