Two massive earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, a magnitude 7.2 followed seconds later by a magnitude 7.5, killing at least 235 people, injuring more than 4,300, and leaving entire neighborhoods in rubble approximately 100 miles west of Caracas. The Trump administration moved within hours to stand up a full-scale humanitarian response, deploying search and rescue teams, military aircraft, and $150 million in emergency aid.
The U.S. Geological Survey has warned the death toll carries a high probability of climbing into the thousands or beyond. Numerous buildings and critical infrastructure completely collapsed under the back-to-back tremors, and thousands remain missing or displaced.
