Trump administration blocked or froze $177 billion in grants, analysis shows

The Trump administration has cut or frozen up to $177 billion in federal grants since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, according to a tracking tool developed by the nonprofit, States United Democracy Center and Grant Witness. The cuts impacted all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and most cuts were directed at health, nutrition, the environment and disaster relief programs, according to the analysis, called “Lost Funds.” 
The $177 billion represents nearly 10% of the federal discretionary fund, the Associated Press reported.
Some of the cuts have faced lawsuits, and in some cases, courts have ruled against the administration’s cuts. 
The tool relies on data from USASpending.gov, an open data source of federal spending information, according to the group’s methodology. The tool is available for public use, and the group said it would be updated regularly as the Trump administration takes new action or court rulings reinstate funding. 
“By bringing thousands of funding disruptions from the Trump administration together in a publicly accessible, verified database, Lost Funds puts the magnitude of their impact on full display,” Scott Delaney, co-founder of Grant Witness, said in a statement.
