    Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Allow Citizenship Verification of Voters

    The Justice Department on Sept. 8 filed an emergency request with the Supreme Court seeking to allow the federal government to verify the citizenship of voters using the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) immigration database [1]. The request follows a federal judge’s ruling earlier in the year that determined the administration’s use of the database for voter roll maintenance violated privacy laws [1]. The legal dispute centers on an executive order signed by President Trump titled “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections,” which directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to compile and share state-level citizenship data with election officials [2].
