U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Honduran President-elect Nasry “Tito” Asfura on Wednesday to begin discussions on reforming trade relations between the two nations.President Donald Trump supported Asfura during the recent elections, which Asfura narrowly won. Greer’s office stated that he and Asfura “intend to launch negotiations of a bilateral Agreement on Reciprocal Trade as soon as possible.”
Since returning to the White House, Trump has imposed tariffs on nearly every nation, beginning with his “Liberation Day” effort. He has since worked to secure permanent trade agreements with major partners and has secured arrangements with much of the Pacific Rim, the European Union, and the UK.
Earlier this week, Asfura met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. U.S. support for his government comes as several Latin American governments appear poised to shift rightward or toward a pro-U.S. position. Honduras borders El Salvador, where President Nayib Bukele has imposed a major crackdown on local drug cartels.
