The U.S. Treasury Department blocked nearly $100 million in taxpayer funds going to dead people after the government implemented a payment verification process last year. After a review of 885 million payments worth nearly $2.7 trillion, the department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service discovered the money was sent to dead people, the New York Post reported.
Since March 2025, the process has found more than 4,900 disbursements associated with dead people worth approximately $99 million, according to the Treasury.
After the ineligible payments were identified, which often result from fraudulent activities, the funds were returned to the originating federal agencies before any funds were disbursed.
