Sen. Thom Tillis told CNN on Sunday he carries a “positive predisposition” toward confirming Todd Blanche as attorney general, but the North Carolina Republican attached clear strings: any sign the Justice Department lacks independence from the White House, he warned, could cost Blanche his vote.
The remarks, delivered on CNN’s “State of the Union,” land less than three weeks before Blanche’s confirmation hearings, scheduled for July 15 and 16 before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Tillis sits on that committee, and he is not seeking reelection, which frees him to speak more bluntly than colleagues still courting voters.
