A Guatemalan immigrant who was being held inside a Newark, New Jersey, detention center last month experienced a medical emergency and died after being transferred to a hospital, federal officials said Wednesday. The immigrant, Jose Chajon-Raxon, is the third immigrant to have died after being detained at the center, which is known as Delaney Hall. The center was reopened in May 2025 as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, the New York Times reported.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Chajon-Raxon on July 18 and took him to Delaney Hall, according to a Department of Homeland Security statement. The next day, a nurse saw him experiencing what appeared to be a seizure.
Medical workers were summoned, and Chajon-Raxon was taken to a hospital. According to the DHS statement, Chajon-Raxon was given proper medical care by the nurse.
