In the early hours of October 1, 2025, masked special-forces officers entered the home of Dr. Augustinos Samaan, a 37-year-old Coptic Christian researcher, seizing his laptop, phone, books, and papers. What followed was a terrorism investigation that could not withstand daylight. After an interrogation that advocates say included torture, prosecutors dropped initial terrorism-related charges and substituted the more familiar charge of blasphemy in Egypt: “contempt of religion” and “misuse of social media” under Article 98(f) of the Penal Code.
