Five years ago, 13 U.S. service members were killed at a place most Americans had never heard of: Abbey Gate, an entrance to Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. U.S. Marines were packed behind barriers and razor wire, screening desperate Afghans trying to get inside the airport and escape the Taliban. Outside the perimeter, Taliban fighters, of all people, were supposed to help keep order.
The anniversary deserves more than a memorial ceremony. It deserves an accounting.
