While the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran reserve their sharpest rhetorical barbs for Israel, they are far harsher to a group of “heretics” in Iran than they are to Iran’s Jews. Ahmed Shaheed, the United Nations special rapporteur on Iran, wrote about “the difficult situation of recognized and unrecognized religious minorities,” saying that non-Muslim communities “continue to report arrests and prosecution for worship and participation in religious community affairs.”
