The bone density fraud: How a flawed test and toxic drugs created a multi-billion dollar medical myth

The current osteoporosis diagnosis system, based on DEXA scans and T-scores, classifies 80% of women over 50 as having osteopenia or osteoporosis—yet two-thirds of fractures occur in people who don’t meet the threshold for either condition.
Bisphosphonates, the first-line treatment for osteoporosis, were originally developed as industrial water softeners for irrigation systems and work by poisoning the bone cells that remove old, weak tissue.
While these drugs reliably increase bone density readings, they simultaneously create brittle bone that fractures more easily, with fracture rates often rising after three to five years of use.
The T-score system was established by a 1994 World Health Organization committee funded by three pharmaceutical companies, and the authors themselves described the cutoffs as “somewhat arbitrary.”
Natural approaches—including weight-bearing exercise, adequate magnesium and vitamin D, and avoiding bone-depleting medications like acid blockers—can restore bone strength without the life-threatening side effects of pharmaceuticals.
