Tennessee governor proposes naming Nashville airport after Dolly Parton

Gov. Bill Lee said Friday that he is working with the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority to rename the airport after late singer Dolly Parton.Parton died Tuesday at the age of 80 from what family members have said was a brief battle with cancer.
Often just known as Dolly, she was born in Sevier County and shared the story through music and a television show of her poor upbringing as one of 12 children in a Smoky Mountains home. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, shared the news of her death on social media.
“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Gov. Bill Lee said in a statement. “From her rural mountain home in East Tennessee to global stages, Dolly carried the Volunteer Spirit with her. At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”
The board will discuss the renaming at its Sept. 17 meeting, according to information provided by Lee.
“Dolly’s remarkable legacy reminds us that what makes Nashville special is our ability to welcome people from every walk of life,” said Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. “She understood that dignity, kindness and opportunity should never be defined by where you come from or your socioeconomic status.
