Ted Turner, the yachtsman, media mogul, and environmental philanthropist, died this past week at the age of 87. He left behind five children, three ex-wives, a fortune of almost $3 billion, and a “conservative” legacy that would make Bill Buckley and Ronald Reagan blush.
Now, to be clear, Turner was an avowed liberal. He supported left-wing political and social causes for much of his adult life. He was adamantly and vocally pro-choice. He funded anti-war and anti-nuclear organizations that challenged American global authority. He donated (or at least promised to donate) a billion dollars to the United Nations, a progressive dream since Woodrow Wilson and the brainchild of FDR. He started CNN, for crying out loud, which, to Republicans, practically defined the term “fake news” for decades, even long before Donald Trump gave it that unofficial moniker. And, perhaps most notably, he was married for a decade to Hanoi Jane Fonda, the woman who set the standard for celebrity limousine-leftism, the actress-turned-activist who was infamously photographed sitting astride a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun, even as the American airmen shot down by that gun were imprisoned and tortured nearby. To put it bluntly, Ted Turner was probably the last person who would associate himself with the GOP and the second-to-last person (behind only Mrs. Fonda-Turner herself) with whom the Grand Old Party would associate itself.
