Taiwan has launched a new online platform to gather intelligence from people inside China. The website, unveiled Sunday by Taiwan’s National Security Bureau, provides a secure channel for Chinese nationals to submit information anonymously.
According to Reuters, Taiwanese officials said the initiative was created in response to an increase in individuals from mainland China seeking ways to share information with authorities in Taiwan as tensions rise between the two countries.
The bureau pointed to economic challenges and tighter political controls in China as factors contributing to public dissatisfaction. The agency said those conditions have led more people to reach out to Taiwan with information in recent years.
Taiwan has repeatedly warned of increasing espionage activity connected to China.
Taiwanese officials have said they are looking to broaden their intelligence-gathering capabilities as security pressures increase.
