Suspicious powder packages target lawmakers across party lines ahead of elections

At least 20 members of Congress and several state lawmakers reported receiving suspicious packages with unknown powdery substances at their offices, triggering evacuations and federal investigations weeks before the midterm elections.
Unlike previous mailings that targeted one party, this wave has struck both Democrats and Republicans, including Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Mike Rounds (R-SD) and multiple House members from both parties.
The FBI is broadly investigating the incidents as a multi-jurisdictional case, but no suspects or coordinating entity has been publicly identified.
The timing mirrors a pattern of similar incidents before the 2024 presidential election, where harmless powder was mailed to election offices in multiple states.
While substances have been deemed harmless, the incidents cause significant operational disruptions, requiring evacuations, hazmat responses and medical screenings for exposed staff.
