One in four young Africans surveyed across 16 countries said U.S. foreign aid cuts could benefit their nations, according to the African Youth Survey 2026 published in July. The survey, conducted by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation, polled 4,901 people aged 18 to 24 and found that 26% of respondents viewed the reductions in funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a potential positive development. By contrast, 46% of respondents said the cuts would have a negative impact, 16% saw no difference, and 11% were unsure, the report stated. [1]
The findings come as the Trump administration continues its dismantling of USAID. In February 2025, the administration placed most USAID employees on administrative leave and later terminated approximately 6,300 programs worldwide, according to the U.S. State Department. The survey was conducted before those terminations were fully implemented, officials said. The results highlight a generational divide in perceptions of foreign aid dependency on the continent.
