In a 6-3 decision Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that racial gerrymandering is unconstitutional, significantly limiting the ability of states to use race as the predominant factor in redistricting.
The Court ruled in Louisiana v. Callais that Louisiana’s congressional map, which created a second majority-black district, is unconstitutional under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits voting practices that discriminate on the basis of race.
