The U.S. Supreme Court handed the Trump administration two major immigration victories Thursday, ruling 6-3 that the government can strip Temporary Protected Status from roughly 350,000 Haitian and 6,100 Syrian migrants, and, in a separate 6-3 decision, that asylum seekers along the U.S.-Mexico border cannot apply for protection until they physically set foot on American soil.
Both opinions were written by Justice Samuel Alito. Both overturned lower federal court orders that had blocked the administration’s enforcement actions. And both drew furious dissents from the Court’s three liberal justices, who accused the majority of enabling racial discrimination and predicting that people will die as a result.
