    Study: Time Spent in Nature Boosts Mood and Cognition Even When Not Stressed

    A new review of 54 studies published between 1996 and 2024 found that exposure to nature improves mood and cognitive function regardless of whether a person is already stressed, according to researchers. The analysis, which examined 61 experiments, compared time in natural settings such as parks and forests to urban environments, as well as indirect exposure through photographs and birdsong.

    Researchers said the findings challenge the dominant framework in environmental psychology that has focused primarily on nature’s restorative effects after stress or mental fatigue. The review was described in an article published by mindbodygreen on August 3, 2026.
