    Study: Strength Training May Improve Sleep Quality More Than Aerobic Exercise

    A new analysis of multiple exercise trials has found that strength training, including weightlifting and bodyweight exercises, produced greater improvements in sleep quality and reductions in insomnia symptoms compared to aerobic activities, according to a study published in Family Medicine and Community Health and reported by mindbodygreen on May 10.

    Researchers compared five categories of exercise – aerobic activities such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming; resistance training; balance exercises; flexibility routines; and combination workouts like yoga or Pilates – to determine which produced the most significant sleep benefits. The study, which synthesized data from existing trials, found that resistance work outperformed all other types in enhancing overall sleep quality and lowering insomnia severity, the report stated.
