Severe infections that require hospital care are associated with a higher risk of developing dementia years later, according to a study published in PLOS Medicine. The research, detailed in a report by Ava Durgin for mindbodygreen, analyzed nationwide health registry data from more than 375,000 individuals, including over 62,000 people who developed dementia and a larger control group that did not.
Researchers identified 29 conditions linked to higher dementia risk, then adjusted for those conditions and found that cystitis and certain bacterial infections still stood out. The infections occurred on average about five to six years before a dementia diagnosis, the study stated. The study shows an association, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship, researchers said.
