A study published in Science Advances developed a speech clock that estimates a person’s age from speech patterns, according to researchers behind the work. The tool was tested against brain health measures in a large multilingual cohort, and the results pointed to a statistical link between speech that sounds older than a person’s actual age and several markers of cognitive decline.

The researchers analyzed speech from 2,928 Spanish-speaking adults in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Colombia, the study stated [1]. The study reported that larger gaps between estimated speech age and actual age were associated with dementia and brain scans that appeared older than expected for a person’s age. According to the report, the findings do not establish that speech changes cause dementia or that the tool can diagnose it [1].
