A slow, low-grade inflammatory state that lingers for years can reshape the human heart long before any symptoms appear, according to a study of nearly half a million adults published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
Researchers at Imperial College London (ICL) analyzed health records from 488,079 participants in the UK Biobank and followed many of them for about 15 years, measuring long-term inflammation with a blood marker called GlycA, the study reported. People in the top fifth for GlycA faced a 43% greater risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure or heart-related death than those in the bottom fifth, according to the findings.
