    Study Finds Scented Products Raise Indoor Air Pollution Levels

    The use of scented products such as incense, oil diffusers, and candles significantly raises indoor air pollution levels, according to a study published in Environment International. The study, conducted by Fei Gao and colleagues, measured fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in London households and found that all three types of fragrance products contributed to elevated indoor concentrations, as reported by Environmental Health Sciences staff on Sept. 12, 2026.

    Burning incense emitted the most indoor air pollution, according to the findings. Households using incense had average indoor PM2.5 levels nearly three times higher than levels measured outdoors, researchers said. The report stated that PM2.5 is a form of air pollution linked to harmful respiratory and cardiovascular effects.
