A study published in Science Advances has found that urolithin A, a natural compound produced in the gut after consuming foods such as pomegranates, walnuts, and some berries, improved heart function in animal models of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and in engineered human heart tissue, according to the report.
Researchers at King’s College London led the study, which involved treating HFpEF animal models and engineered human heart tissue with urolithin A, according to the report. The findings suggest that urolithin A could potentially address the underlying stiffness and relaxation problems in HFpEF, the authors stated.
