Researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University have reported that calorie restriction speeds up how cells maintain ribosomes, the molecular machines that build proteins. The findings, published in Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, identify a potential mechanistic link between reduced calorie intake and increased lifespan observed in laboratory animals.

For decades, scientists have documented that restricting calories extends lifespan in organisms ranging from yeast to rodents. According to literature on calorie restriction, this dietary intervention consistently reduces overall protein synthesis while increasing cellular recycling processes such as autophagy. [1] The new study suggests that changes in ribosome maintenance may connect these observations.
