    Study: Adding 1,700 to 5,500 Steps Daily Offsets Health Risks of Prolonged Sitting

    A study published in Nature Communications on April 20, 2026, found that adding 1,700 to 5,500 steps per day can lower the risk of several chronic conditions among adults who sit 8 to 14 hours daily, according to a report by Ava Durgin for mindbodygreen. The research analyzed data from more than 15,000 U.S. adults who used Fitbit devices to track daily steps and sedentary time over months and years. Medical records were linked to the movement data to identify patterns between sitting time, physical activity, and the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and heart disease.
