There is a growing, lucrative cottage industry in Washington of political operatives who make their living by pretending to be the vanguard of the MAGA movement while actively attempting to destroy its most effective policies. Ironically, at the very top of this grift sits Steve Bannon, a man who built an entire media empire by claiming to be the ultimate defender of President Donald Trump’s America First agenda.
But if you strip away the bluster, the theatrical podcast rants, and the breathless warnings about the “uniparty,” a much more cynical reality emerges. Bannon is not Trump’s loyal ally; he is a saboteur using the rhetoric of “America First” to box the president in, destroy his strategic leverage, and manipulate the populist base with help from what appears to be a fabricated outrage bot network.
