A shipyard explosion on Staten Island killed one worker and injured 34 FDNY members Friday afternoon, leaving a fire marshal intubated in critical condition and raising urgent questions about what caused the blast at a waterfront facility where firefighters had entered to rescue trapped workers.
The FDNY received a report of workers trapped and a fire at the back of the shipyard at 3075 Richmond Terrace, between Lockman Avenue and Andros Avenue, around 3:30 p.m., ABC7NY reported. Firefighters rushed to a basement area inside a metal structure near the docks where the workers were caught. Roughly fifty minutes later, around 4:20 p.m., a major explosion tore through the site while crews were still inside conducting searches.
