The State Department issued a worldwide caution travel advisory Saturday, citing heightened tensions in the Middle East. The department warned that the situation in the Middle East could result in unforeseen escalation and urged Americans overseas to monitor the news for breaking developments in their regions.
“The Department of State advises Americans worldwide, and especially in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution,” the department said in the advisory. “Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.”
The department warned Americans that travel could be disrupted if there are flight cancellations or airspace closures and that American diplomatic facilities outside the Middle East have been targeted.
“Groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world,” the department said.
The warning comes after fighting in the region resumed this week after negotiations failed to end the conflict, which was in a state of nominal ceasefire for months.
