    Spain’s Sanchez Urges EU to Activate Blocking Statute Against U.S. Sanctions on ICC

    Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday called on the European Commission to activate the EU Blocking Statute to shield the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the United Nations from U.S. sanctions imposed under the Trump administration. Sanchez posted on X that “Spain does not look the other way” and that “the EU cannot stand idly by in the face of this persecution,” according to a report by Middle East Eye [1]. He added that sanctioning those who defend international justice “puts the entire human rights system at risk” [1]. The request comes after the US imposed financial and visa sanctions on 11 ICC officials and the UN special rapporteur on Palestine since February 2025, as reported by the same source [1]
