Shri Thanedar trails progressive challenger, but race too close to call

 Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., is hanging on for dear life in his primary battle with the progressive Donavan McKinney.The Tuesday evening primary pitted the AIPAC-backed businessman incumbent against a candidate with the support of his local Democratic Socialists of America.
What had been expected to be a clean win for McKinney has turned into a slough, however, with the race still too close to call well into Wednesday morning.
As of press time, McKinney led with 51.9% of the vote to Thanedar’s 48.1%, with 79% of the vote reported.
Thanedar previously secured the party nomination due in part to a divided black vote in the last electoral cycle. The district centers on Detroit and McKinney, who is black, seems to have avoided the setback facing Thanedar’s previous opponents.
The Michigan congressman achieved national recognition last year when he introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, just months into the term.
