President Trump marched into the Senate’s Mansfield Room on Wednesday and told Republican senators, in blunt terms, to get the SAVE America Act to his desk. He brought Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth along to press the case for tens of billions in emergency Pentagon funding. And when it was over, the GOP conference was no closer to a workable strategy than when the meeting began.
The SAVE America Act, which would require documented proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and photo identification at the polls, has become the central flashpoint between an impatient White House and a Senate majority that cannot agree on how, or even whether, to move the bill past a Democratic filibuster.
