The U.S. Senate voted 50 to 48 on Tuesday to adopt a war powers resolution aimed at halting American military action against Iran, a symbolic but pointed rebuke that drew support from four Republican senators and passed only because two others were absent.
The resolution carries no force of law and will not land on the president’s desk. But the vote itself marks the first time both chambers of Congress have approved a measure seeking to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities under the 1973 War Powers Act, as AP News reported. The House passed the same resolution earlier this month in what was described as a rare display of House Republicans breaking with the White House.
