Scientists working near Weizhou Island off China’s southwestern coast generated electricity from sunlight at a depth of 10 meters, or nearly 33 feet, according to a study published in the research journal Joule and reported by EuroNews.
The researchers described the test as a new record for photovoltaic research. They employed perovskite-based solar cells rather than conventional silicon and adjusted them to capture the blue and green wavelengths of sunlight that penetrate the ocean surface.
