As teachers, I think we’re all playing a game of Whack-A-Mole with our students’ technology. And I don’t primarily mean their smartphones, which have been rightfully banned or restricted in almost 40 states, but their Chromebooks and tablets.
By swapping smartphones for an equally addictive machine, schools have neglected to create an environment that fosters productive use of technology. Instead, they’ve disguised the same situation as progress, and children are enduring the ramifications. As media theorist Neil Postman said, “Technology giveth and technology taketh away.”
