Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparred with CNN anchor Dana Bash on Sunday’s “State of the Union,” repeatedly placing blame for the COVID-19 pandemic on former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci and insisting that safeguarding constitutional rights must come first in any future public health emergency. Bash herself called the interview “contentious.”
Bash pushed back, noting public health experts point to a mix of factors behind the pandemic’s death toll, including gaps in health care access and the spread of misinformation, and reminded Kennedy that Fauci also served under President Donald Trump’s first administration. Kennedy did not budge. “Anthony Fauci was mismanaging the COVID pandemic and was doing it under the Biden administration. President Trump wanted to end the lockdowns,” he said.
