Benjamin Jacob, University of South Florida professor, and a team of researchers, are using artificial intelligence to target breeding grounds for mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus in an effort to address an outbreak of dengue fever in Florida. Cases of the disease have spiked this year, where 425 locally acquired cases have been reported. There were an additional 288 international cases reported as well.
The outbreak was largely concentrated in Hillsborough County, which surrounds Tampa, The Hill reported.
Jacob’s system uses satellite images along with weather patterns and known breeding grounds to identify potential locations quickly. The information is then handed over to the state for its eradication efforts.
