Rep. Davidson: Americans ‘right to be skeptical’ of Iran war

Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, this week, said that Americans were “right to be skeptical” of the Iran war, as the administration has struggled to articulate a consistent explanation for the conflict starting. After months of hinting at a strike on Iran, the Trump administration launched a joint attack with Israel last week. Different administration officials have offered different sets of explanations and goals for the conflict. Speaking on CNN, Davidson recalled Trump’s campaign promise of not starting new foreign wars and said that it had resonated with voters.
“Well, look, I think the public’s right to be skeptical, and, frankly, that’s part of why President Trump’s, you know, ‘no new wars’ kind of campaign mindset resonated with the public,” he said. “You look at war-weary people who’ve seen just endless wars really in this century so far, post-9/11, the U.S. has kind of been in continual war.”
He further highlighted that the U.S. has a long history of not formally declaring war, in spite of a constitutional mandate that Congress do so. He specifically cited the Korean War and insisted that the conflict was a war, despite the government’s efforts to deny such at the time.
Trump, for his part, has deemed the conflict a “special combat operation.”
