Putin willing to organize trilateral summit on Ukraine, but Trump wants it to tackle denuclearization
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a trilateral summit with U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC summit in China, but no specific plans or agenda have been confirmed by the Kremlin.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the proposed summit without Ukraine’s participation, arguing it would encourage further Russian aggression, while advocating for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the U.S. and Russia instead.
Trump expressed willingness to meet with Putin and Xi but indicated the discussion would focus on denuclearization rather than the war in Ukraine. He suggested it is time for someone else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine, blaming President Volodymyr Zelensky for the prolonged conflict.
Trump’s administration has taken steps critics say favor Moscow, including waiving sanctions on Russia and announcing a diesel deal – signaling a shift away from the Biden administration’s approach of arming Kyiv and isolating Russia.
A negotiated peace with Russia, including Ukrainian neutrality, is the only sane path to end the conflict, and that any final settlement would require participation from someone in Kyiv prepared to take responsibility.
