New poll reveals broad bipartisan support for AI pause and wealth tax on billionaires

A Wall Street Journal poll found that 63% of American adults support a pause on AI development and 61% favor a federal wealth tax on billionaires, with 57% saying the government should regulate AI immediately.
The poll reveals a growing convergence of voter sentiment across party lines, driven by deteriorating material conditions and a link between unchecked AI development, billionaire enrichment and declining economic security.
Voters show overwhelming support for working-class policies including banning surprise medical bills (90%), mandating health insurance coverage (88%), capping prescription drug prices (87%) and limiting credit card interest rates to 79%.
Economists note that while no single policy would reverse working-class fortunes, the breadth of support indicates voters connect concentrated tech wealth with the existential risks of unregulated AI.
Despite consistently high public support for wealth taxes and corporate regulation, Congress has not passed such measures and Big Tech’s control over data and revenue streams makes it difficult for smaller political candidates to compete.
