New Jersey governor backs state voter ID laws but opposes federal SAVE Act

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill recently stated that she would back state laws that require identification to vote in elections, even as she put her foot down on the Republican SAVE America Act, claiming it was a “tool of voter suppression.” The comment comes after Sherrill announced last month that a software glitch resulted in the state’s motor vehicle system accidentally registering 6,600 noncitizens to vote. She acknowledged that as many as 400 of those individuals voted in recent elections. 
A spokesman for Sherrill’s office said Tuesday that the governor did not oppose voter ID laws and that she is “open to considering proposals” for stronger voter ID laws in the wake of the July glitch.
The company that she said caused the glitch, IDEMIA, disputed that claim, saying that it was the state’s responsibility to verify voter eligibility. Two House committees are now looking into that dispute. 
“Governor Sherrill supports the current rules requiring ID for voter registration, and she is open to considering proposals to strengthen those to make sure we have the strongest, fairest elections in the nation,” a spokesperson in the governor’s office told Fox News.
In order to register to vote, New Jerseyans are required to show a valid driver’s license or ID card issued by the state Motor Vehicle Commission or present the state with their Social Security number, according to the state Division of Elections.
The spokesman reiterated the governor’s rejection of legislation backed by President Donald Trump’s allies and requests for information on New Jersey residents.
“Governor Sherrill served our country in the military and as a public servant because she believes in every citizen’s right to participate in our democracy by voting,” the spokesperson said. “That’s why she has stood firm against MAGA Republicans voter suppression attempts and Trump’s demands for New Jersey voters’ personal identifiable information.”
The comments also come as Trump and his allies seek a national mandate that requires voters present proof of citizenship to register to vote and requires Americans to show ID when voting.
