While the left and their intolerant, single-party media writers are wailing over a season premiere of 60 Minutes that didn’t look all that different from past incarnations, Tuesday’s CBS Mornings aired a spellbinding CBS News investigation published online Sunday showing rampant abuse of the U.S. surrogacy system by Chinese billionaires to create dozens of babies with dual citizenship.
Communist Chinese exploiting loopholes? Meant for families struggling to conceive? For possible national security gains? What could possibly go wrong! This takes the discussion of “anchor babies” from illegal immigrants to a whole other, more terrifying place.
Co-host Norah O’Donnell had the setup to the story from politics and legal reporter Katrina Kaufman:
[W]e’re going to begin this hour with a CBS News investigation into commercial surrogacy, where a woman carries and gives birth for someone else, in exchange for payment. While surrogacy can help build families, our investigation found some cases that raise serious concerns about whether the system has enough safeguards for the surrogate mothers and the children
Kaufman told the first part of the story through the lens of a surrogate she dubbed “Judy,” whose identity they chose to “obscur[e]…as she speaks out for the first time about an experience she says has left her deeply conflicted.”
Through tears, “Judy” told Kaufman she’s “worrie[d]” and “upset” that her surrogacy agency failed to “protect” her and ensure she was matched “with people with good intentions.”
Kaufman explained “Judy” had said yes to the $65,000 payout to aid “a single dad,” but she quickly learned “this single dad was also having children with 20 other surrogates.”
Sure enough, this “single dad” is “Chinese billionaire Xu Bo, a video game executive,” who “recently posted this photo on social media showing more than 100 children” and already had “a dozen” children “born” to him “through surrogates in the U.S.”
