The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) has filed a proposal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to establish new reliability requirements for data centers and other large electricity consumers connecting to its grid. The filing, submitted in late August, outlines a framework designed to improve the grid operator’s visibility into the behavior of large loads that can significantly impact system stability. [1]
The proposal targets facilities defined as “large loads” that exceed 50 megawatts (MW), with a separate classification for “computational loads” that include at least 25 MW of demand from information technology (IT) equipment such as servers, storage, and networking hardware.
